I've seen it both ways... you just have to know the route, and what fare-bottom is. I just purchased tickets to FLL for Oct/08. I've bought tickets out 7 days, and 11 months, I just know my routes and fare-bottoms.
Yet still good advice, as just keep in mind, you can always go further out in time when purchasing... there's a limit to how close to departure you can buy a ticket!
