You can change the return on a ticket per the fare rules usually paying the service charge. This applies whether the outbound has been flown or not. If you change the return to stay longer (and I know you're not) you may end up with an add collect on your fare due to breaking maximum stay rules. Changing outbound dates causes a recalculation of the fare and and exchange transaction on the old ticket, again with any applicable service charge.
