My HKG-ORD from a couple weeks ago stayed several hundred miles south of Alaska! We went right down the Straits of Juan de Fuca and just north of Seattle. Never even got over Canada.

I asked one of the pilots about the routing and he said yeah, that was certainly further south than usual. The crew was taking advantage of better tailwinds, he said. In fact the inflight display was showing tailwinds around 100mph the whole flight and our flying time was 13:15, landing about 25 minutes early.
