I recall flying the "long way round" JNB-LHR in the late 80s - was one of the first times I ever flew, so I can't remember much detail.

Does anyone have any info about the route / distance / time etc? Also about the aircraft - I know that SAA used the 747sp, but how could I know if I flew in one, or in a -400?

I was a young lad at the time, and about the only thing I remember was the rubber stethoscope-type headphones to watch the IFE.
