Well I think this really stinks! United seems to be doing all they can to drive people away from them, just when I too have been thinking about filing for divorce from UA. I think it's safe to say that one won't be able to accrue miles on these free tickets. And will these free tickets be upgradeable??? Also, this delightful new policy doesn't take into account the amount of time you're waiting to take the next available flight. Your compensation is the same if your next flight is 2 hours later or 6 hours later!
And what's up with the no free flights to Canada? UA only flies to 3 cities in Canada anyway! I love how UA considers Canada to be the 51st state when it suits their interests, and a foreign country when it doesn't.
Needless to say, I have always been happy and eager to volunteer my seat in the past, but no more, United! This is obviously another "cost saving" move on the part of UA. The bean counters must have figured its cheaper to give you a free ticket on a half empty flight than it is to give you a credit voucher for any flight. People who fly once a year to visit Aunt Bertha in Peoria will no doubt jump at the chance for a free domestic ticket, but they probably won't get any takers from us frequent flyers! Shame shame United.
