Just got back to BKK on TG992 on New Years Eve. Air NZ lounge is very comfortable and does make the wait somewhat more bearable. Most shops in the transit area in BNE will be closed by the departure times.
Note that TG992 will be on the ancient pre Don Muang versions of the 747. No AVOD, no pitch. Just nice colourful but thin seats which are deceptively uncomfortable.
If the upgrade option fails, avoid the exit rows in the 747 as you get legroom but lose privacy. At rows 31 and 53, you get noisy galleys when the crew gets chatty while serving late night supper. Row 53/53 H, J and K are blocked by crew use. Row 43 are ok if you don't mind the smell from the toliets. If all else fails, ask to be seated behind on an empty flight so you two may score an empty row. Row 68 - 71 have limited recline.
Silver status will earn you priority baggage tags and extra luggage allowance with a sympathetic ground staff but will not change the fact that you are flying cattle class.
