oversized carry-on for an LCD monitor

I will (probably) be flying with Delta. I would like to carry on a 24" LCD monitor which measures about 22.5" x 14.25" x 4". As you can see it is just a small amount over the allowed length and width of a normal 'max-sized' carry-on. So I have been pulling my hair, desperately researching something that is just a little bit over a legal carry-on size. So far I have found a rollaboard (Delsey Helium GX250 24") at 24x16x9, a backpack (High Sierra Transporter)which allegedly measures 23x14.5x8.5 which would be perfect if the bag were perfectly rectangular but, like most panel loader backpacks it has a big radius on the corners, a perfectly legal 22x14x9 pack (MEI Voyageur), which is also a panel loading pack but seems to have sharper corners than the High Sierra, and a backpack/rollaboard which measures 24x14x9 (Backside Gear2go). IOW, the pickings are very slim indeed. The backpacks have the advantage of being lower profile. It seems that rollaboards get most of the scrutiny as long as the backpack is not obviously large. And a softer pack can squeeze into more places.

The only one which I really think is likely to fit the monitor is the delsey rollaboard, but I am concerned about whether it will be allowed as a carry-on, especially since it doesn't have a chance in hell of fitting in the bin wheels-in. I haven't used the overhead bins much in the past so I am not sure what is normal. Are there a lot of 'bin hogs' who put their bags in sideways? Or would I likely be the only one on my plane trying to get away with it? Anyone care to guess as to my chances for success? If it helps any, I will be boarding in Boston and connecting in Atlanta.

If I have to check the monitor I am guessing that there is less than a 50% chance of it not being damaged or stolen before it gets to baggage claim in Bogota. I guess I am trying to get some idea whether it is worth the extra effort in buying (and maybe returning) the other items to try to squeeze my monitor into a tighter fitting but lower profile pack. Or whether I should just not worry about it and go for that 24" rollaboard.
