Yes you should definitely do it. The train ride takes about 20 minutes and they have day return rates. I've always aimed for two hours (even whilst in "transit") and that has always given me tons of time. When you arrive back to the airport get your boarding pass replaced at check in (from the NZ issued one to a UA one) and they will give you an express pass for customs/security line which will speed you in to the airport
