Ask for their "file number" (a United employee number). This is not their Social Security Number. It is a distinct number to United. And I once had a United airport manager tell me that employees are supposed to give this number out if requested by a customer for reporting purposes.

This number even appears on your boarding passes (the number of the person that checked you in).

But you'll even find some agents don't want to give that up either.
