Thank you. As a long-time mostly lurker, I'll admit to being shy at posting my question and now am wowed that I'm getting so much help. Where's the blushing smiley?

I'm going to let him know about this flight and secretly keep on pushing to see if any XF opens up on that SFO-LAX. (And take a Community College course so I can learn to fix things on my own).
