24 hour cancellation policy - interesting experience

Yesterday I booked a flight on united.com, roundtrip, two segments each - LH and UA, non-refundable coach. In a couple of hours I realised that I needed to make a change, a later return. So I called 1K reservations.

First the agent told me that with penalties and re-faring it will cost me extra $200. I asked about 24 hour cancellation policy - why not to cancel the original reservation and book a new one? She put me on hold for a while. When she came back she apologized and said that this was unusual situation. Apparently there is no clear definition - does this rule apply to all flights booked through United (including *), or only to United flights. She put me on hold again, but in the end she said that supervisor let her cancel the original reservation, so I avoided any extra fees.

Anybody had similar experience? Booking * flights through United and trying to cancel within 24 hours?
