Another possibility (and yes I know it is FlyerTalk ) is to consider Amtrak, if it is convenient.

Although I'll be the first to admit that it would not be good for NY-LA, if you're going from (say) ORD-CLE or DCA-BOS and both airports are closed due to the snow, the trains may be running! And it may be easier than sleeping in the airport (and hope to be on the flight tomorrow ) or cheaper than a hotel. And Amtrak does not have those (VERY) high walk-up fares for the next train out! (It may even be the lowest fare on the train! )
