Welcome to FlyerTalk,
jasovin!
According to many people over in the AA forum (but I haven't done this myself to date), you can book a flight on BA (non-TATL of course), upgrade with BA miles, and then at the gate ask to have your AA number put in instead an earn AA miles (based on your orignally-booked cabin). Perhaps you can do something simliar (for a different reason), but you should ask specifically in the LAN forum about if/how you can do this on LAN. If the upgrade is done through some instrument like "coupons" by the time you change the FF number that may not be a problem, but if the upgrade is done automatically based on your status you want to make sure they won't take your upgrade away the moment you change the FF number. (And by the time you've gotten on the plane, it's likely too late to change the FF number.)
