If the person at the elite line didn't know that it was delayed until they called EWR ops then there is no reason to think that the GA would have all that much information based of what the systems are showing unless they go out of their way to look for the inbound. If you had asked that question you might have gotten a more sufficient answer, I suppose, but it is EWR.

I don't think the GA lied or did anything all that inappropriate. CO does havwe a habit of not doing so well at cascading the delays through the system in a timely manner so late flights appear on-time for longer than they should be, especially for turns at outstations, but otherwise this is business as usual.
