CRJs sjc-lax, a bit shortsighted?

I just tried to book a flight to Los Angeles for this evening and was shocked to find that UA has no availablity AT ALL for two people. Consequently, I'm forced to fly American (which I would have done anyway, in the absence of lower fares). Although this is the first time I've tried to fly to LAX since the emergence of CRJs on the route (and hence, a very limited data set), I can't help but think that the decision to downgrade SJC-LAX was a bit brash on UA's part. What are the experinces (load factors, convenience, delays, etc.) of those of you who have been flying this route recently (as compared to before)?
