The OP did not mention this, but did the flight use the same flight number (even if there was a scheduled change of EQP) for the total ininerary? If so, that is considered a "through" flight and has been so for decades.

I'm not saying I like it but this is not news and as other posters have indicated, can be worked around with different connections.
