Amex - Single Transaction Limit

Just wanted to document this annoying situation.

I have a BA Amex and recently triggered a 2for1. I then signed my fiance up for an account to enable us to earn a second 2for1. This should be pretty easy as we have a few big purchases coming up. One of these being my annual season ticket.

My fiance's credit limit is about 100 less than my season ticket costs, we also have a trip coming up and so I overpaid the last bill by about £5k to put the card into well into credit.

Anyway, I just tried to buy my season ticket but the charge was declined. I called Amex and apparently it's impossible to put a single transaction through that is more than the credit limit, even if the card is in credit!

This now means that I have to put the season ticket on my Amex (to get the miles) but it won't qualify for 2for1 spend.

It also means that I'll have to try and recover some of the money from Amex to cover the bill on my other account.

Lame.
