Sorry my mistake, you're right about the non-automatic part, but just to confirm in the process did you upgrade the status member or the non-status member?

I guess I've been hyper sensitive to having two passengers on a single itinerary taking away chance of upgrade so I've always done separately. It annoys me that the auto upgrade process would pass up an SE with two people for an E with only one, rather than automatically upgrading and splitting them up.

I guess in the future I should book together and ask them to break up the itinerary if I don't have at least one upgrade at the 7 day window and start with the E first if there is only one. Lesson learned.
