If the dimensions of the bike box/case are under the allowed parameters, I do
not think they will charge you for a bike.

I do not have any personal experience, but a friend of mine travels around
(mostly within the country) with his road bike in a hard shell case without
any additional fees.

Not sure how the liability/insurance would work if something
does not go well.
