You are correct. Once you hit 100, they issue a certifcate that you have 1 year to use. So the reality is you have up to the 1 year +the 3-4 months out that JB lets you book a ticket.

She was either mistaken or just pulling out all the stops to get me to sign up using her code so I can get her 20 pts.

I was always under the impression that the AmEx card just prevented earned points from expiring, but once you hit the 100 points and a reward was issued the 1 year expiry remained firmly in place.
