A briefcase should be fine. I think the opening is bigger on the ERJs than it is on the CRJs -- my computer bag barely fits in the CRJ bins, but is just fine in the ERJ bins. The only briefcase/computer bags I've seen having trouble fitting in the ERJ bins are rolling bags. But odds are you'll be just fine.
