is excess baggage really £38 per kilo?

We are travelling J to HKG/AKL next week and we have a 30kg allowance each. We are afraid we will be a little over this - possible up to 40kg each. Called Cathay in London today and they said the excess rate was £38 per kilo - yikes. We are in fact checking in with BA in EDI so hopefully the lady will forget that the BA allowance is more generous than the Cathay but has anyone ever paid £38 a kilo??
