The point is not to have everyone sprinting to the gate. It makes things to chaotic and running passengers cause delays.

The issue is not being checked in 30 minutes prior to departure (as you were) It is being at the gate 30 minutes prior to departure. And if you aren't even at the ticket counter at that time you can't be at the gate ready to board.
