I don't know about specifically buying lenses in Japan, but I know that Nikon equipment sold outside of the US has an international warranty, rather than a US warranty. This means that for any service you'd need to send it in to Nikon somewhere OUTSIDE the USA (usually Canada). The US service centers will not accept it for warranty work.
