If I'm waiting for an ug in the RCC, I'll ask a couple of times. The agents will let me know if/when I need to go to the gate or not. I've never lost one for this reason. (I did lose out on a SFO-BOS upgrade on a 757 due to the first letter of my last name being after the other two guys waiting...).
