United Completes Cockpit Door Reinforcement
United's entire active fleet of aircraft are now
equipped with the new cockpit security bars in
compliance with the new U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration's (FAA) guidelines.
United was one of the first airlines to announce
that it would reinforce cockpit doors following the
Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.
In all, the company has reinforced cockpit doors on
611 aircraft in just over two weeks. United's
employees literally worked around-the-clock to
finish the task on the entire operating fleet by
today.
The company has implemented a number of new security
measures following Sept. 11. It meets or exceeds
all security directives required by the FAA and put
in place to assure the safety of customers and
employees.
"We will continue to observe the heightened level of
security on the ground and in the air that has
characterized commercial air travel ever since the
terrorist attacks," says Andy Studdert, executive
vice president and chief operating officer. "The
effectiveness of the cockpit door reinforcement
program and the speed with which we have deployed it
is a testament to the coordinated efforts of our
pilots, ALPA, maintenance and engineering, the IAM
and our safety and security group."
