I can only relate my experience from 2007. I was on an A fare.
My YYZ-LHR leg was on a Saturday in June. I was waitlisted at the four day window. It was J6, but I cleared the waitlist before the day of the flight. The flight was packed in both cabins.
My YYZ-LHR leg was on a Friday on the 1pm (approx.) flight. I was waitlisted at the four day window. I went to LHR at opening to make a same-day change to the 9am flight. They confirmed my change, gave me an exit row seat, and put me on the upgrade waitlist for that flight. I was the last to clear at the gate. Two others didn't make the cut.
Others will report that they can never get upgrades. That's because they have no karma. I suspect you have karma, so you should have no trouble.
If flights are showing B,V,Q,L,A < 1 then I will wait till day of departure and try and move to a flight with I (do I have to do this at the airport?)
I did try changing online, but I couldn't, so I went to the airport. Plan to do it at the airport. Maybe it will work online, maybe it won't.
