Having done that exact routing on a number of occasions I would strongly suggest taking a weekend break a few weeks in advance and paying the GBP200 or so stopover fee. Failing that then go with Raffles' suggestion and arrive back at LON late at night and then catch the following day's BA5 or 7. All the Italian cities are lovely places to mini-break.
