I had a two hour delay ORD-SJC for a mechanical earlier this week and received the apolpgy letter the next day--figured it was targeted to 1K's although that is only a guess.

UA responded very well by finding a replacement aircraft in short order and much lost time was made up in flight.

No extra miles awarded but really didn't expect anything for a delay that actually went pretty well. The letter was a nice gesture.
