Currently UA does not participate in the *A mileage upgrade scheme. You need either NZ Airpoints airbucks, NZ Airpoints elite status upgrade vouchers, or miles with a FFP that does participate in the *A mileage upgrade scheme. Note that only high economy fares (or premium economy fares) are upgradeable in the *A mileage upgrade scheme, and that premium economy and business class on these flights often sell out.
