To confuse the issue, this is new on UA's website today:

"The continued use of e-ticketing has been approved by the FAA.
Customers traveling on e-tickets will need to provide documentation of their purchase as proof of travel in order to pass through security checkpoints.

Proper documentation is:

A printed copy of an e-ticket receipt
A printed copy of a confirmation e-mail
A printed airline or travel agency itinerary confirming an e-ticket
Print your united.com e-ticket receipts from:

The confirmation page following your on-line purchase
The My itineraries page, for previous online purchases made by registered united.com users
You may also print an e-ticket receipt when you check-in for your flight using United's self-service EasyCheck-inSM units.

If you are traveling on an e-ticket without proper documentation, you will have to check-in first at a United ticket counter in the airport lobby. Customers with e-tickets that want to fly on a different carrier will need to obtain a paper ticket from United (except for Air Canada and Continental)."
