DC-10s and L-1011s were regular sights at LGA when they were operated by the majors. 4 engined jets have always been banned. New aircraft types must be approved by LGA in some manner.

The expansion of point to point service with regional jets and commuter aircraft has saturarated the airspace and available aircraft movements negatively impacting reliability of larger aircraft but the airlines don't seem to want to relent in their pursuit of LGA market dominance to increase reliabilty on highly profitable and competitive business routes like to ORD.
