I grew up near SFO. This landing route is exceedingly rare. So rare, that I remember as a kid, it was reported on the news that weather had caused this landing pattern, my mom and I went down to the observation parking lot to watch them land.
Those days are loooong gone.
My buddy and I used to go hang out in that parking lot all the time after we got our drivers' licenses. Sad that it's gone, it would have been a great place to do spotting today.
Funny, I did notice the wind was gusty and from the north on the way to work this morning, but I didn't think about what it would do to SFO ops. Too bad, that would have been worth a little detour.
