I've stayed in quite a few RIs and MANY HSs. Pinniped hit it on the head-they are very similar.
It's rare that an ES doesn't have a door seperating the bedroom from the living room (with sleeper bed).
Most ESs have the bathroom in the the "common area" (near the wet bar and living room. HSs have the bathrooms connected to the bedroom.
The evening receptions at HSs and RIs are similar and vary by properties. Generally, I found that RIs have better social hour food.
ES's "social hour+" has liquor, but rarely food.
ESs also have interior door entrances. Some HSs have them and fewer RIs.
ESs also have better breakfasts along with restaurants and room service.
