Mrs. dstan and I have taken to booking an aisle and window in Y in the hope that we may end up with an empty middle seat between us. (Made the mistake of booking two adjacent seats back from our honeymoon in Australia on QF and there was nothing the checkin agent could do to get us our own row since all of the aisles and windows were booked up.) When it doesn't work out, the person with the middle seat is usually only too happy to hear: "My wife has the window, would you like to switch with her?" (Yes, I do try to keep the aisle for us ) I was a bit surprised that one guy actually griped about it, but he turned out to be a deadheader and prob didn't realize that the middle seat was supposed to be his since Mrs. dstan had already moved (oops! definitely our bad, see below).

On the flip side, I don't think there's anything wrong with a polite, "No, I'm sorry, I'd like to keep my seat because of xyz." No need to be indignant, just be matter-of-fact. And people swaping in advance without you is just plain rude (see above )

What, did 21A think you were scalping counterfeit BP's into F?
