But as I read the T&C's I noted that all mileage on those flights must accrue to UA's Mileage Plus program. So now I'm back to looking forward to another year of being scrunched in the back of UA metal on routes not served by AC - unless, of course, I wish to pay cash for each sector which, in fact, is not a terribly bad deal.
Woe is me
Why would you pay for E+.
If you fly on UA often, get 1K to gift you 3P or 2P.
All UA 1K get options to gift at least 3P most have 2 elite status to gift: 3P & 2P. Some even have 3 status to gift. 1-3P and 2-2P. Both of these status give you access to E+
Have the 1K gift it on or after 1July and the status is valid for 18months.

As for having to post the miles to UA MP way around that as well.
UA PNR's like SQ have 2 fields.
One field for FF# to the program the member wants to credit the miles which is the first field.
The second is for Status Recognition on UA.
After I cross 250K on UA, I credit any access miles to SQ these days.
I have my TA issue the ticket. Call UA, have the Reservation agent add my SQ # in the first field & my UA 1k in the second field.
I get all the 1K recognition including upgrades.

Or as the other poster suggested, give your MP# and at check-in change it to AC.
