It really depends on the time of day. The Belt Parkway can be OK… sometimes… but the Staten Island Expressway and the Verrazano Bridge can be torture if you hit these at the wrong time. Also note that traveling from JFK or LGA to New Jersey through Manhattan can be pretty quick depending on time of day. For example I drove from JFK at 6:30pm on a Monday night 2 weeks ago via the Van Wyck, LIE, BQE, Williamsburg Br and Holland Tunnel and hit absolutely zero traffic if you can believe it. Going via Staten Island would have been much worse this time of day.

Even Homer Simpson considers public transportation to be for losers… but when I worked in Jersey City I’d take the PATH train over to Penn Station rather than NJT and then the LIRR to Jamaica where you can catch the air train to your terminal.
