Seems like your best bet is to have your friend's check be written out to MC/Visa/Amex and for you to keep a copy of that check. I'm not sure this is any different when some of us bought Chase traverlers checks and deposited unused ones back into an account, or if savings bonds are redeemed. Just keep a record of this and then charge away.
