That said, if transiting at DEL is merely unpleasant, but not horribly so, I'm looking for advice on how to make the process as streamlined and easy as possible.
Daytime arrival (say LH MUC-DEL) followed by a nighttime flight to SIN/BKK ex DEL - no shortage of those. You won't even need a hotel .. you could just get a shower - there's basic facilities at the airport though I'd suggest you bring your own toiletries - and drive around in a taxi, get some dinner.
