I didn't know the CG was thinking about hiring more civilians for this program. If they do it's a good idea, it would help provide the continuity they loose when personnel get rotated out. Some of the other items in the article I hope they don't do, such as transferring the program back to DOT. Maritime safety and security are interrelated; in that if there is a fire or explosion on board a vessel, for the most part, the crew is going to fight the fire and conduct damage control the same way no matter what the cause.

Also a bit offended by the remarks by the civilian mariner in the article who does not think a "enlisted petty officer"* can not do the job properly.
