Most are first come first serve, but the number of award seats are limited, especially for the premium cabins. When come to waitlisting, status can make a difference. When an airline releases more award seats, the person has a higher status will get it first. However, his status will only help him, not as much for you.
When you said upgrade, I suppose you meant op-up. Yes, his status will increase the chance of op-up, sometimes not just for him but also for you.
