It's like a recirculating water system everything flows all around the hose from the central "pump" through patch panels, cable combiners, switches, etc., etc.

I can see media gateways distributed through out the house at some point but I think they will all talk to each other across the stared wiring. That is of course my opinion and this being flyertalk, YMMV.
