Yes, but that implies you always originate near the cable modem box, which is fine for internet, but not so much for sharing media, where a PC DVR might be in the master bedroom, and you need to distribute out to the other bedrooms. You'd have to route traffic back to the router, and then distribute it out from there, which might be okay but I can see circumstances where that may not be desirable, especially on homes with multiple floors.

So doing a "home run" is not really future proof, only internet future proof.
