With regards to avoiding Taiwan all together I think it is not a fair assumption.
I had a wonderful experience on all my flights, transiting 3 times through TPE.
Having transited through many airports, ICN, SIN, YYZ.... over the last few month, TPE is one of my favourite ones. Almost or no line ups, wether security for transit passengers or immigration. Eventhough the lounges are not up to standards of other major carriers, I would transit and go through TPE anytime including flying on EVA Air, I find it relaxing.
I even found that the priority tags worked, on all my flights my luggage came out very much in the beginning - it might have just been luck.
Having luggage weight could happen on any airline. Since all the restrictions on liquid and other carry on restrictions I have learnt to travel very light, especially with regards to carry on.
I was not at at all talking about avoiding Taiwan where I have had all kinds of good experiences, just the AIRLINES of Taiwan...
