I agree with Samos, but Patmos is a bit tricky to get to. If I were going to GR for the first time, the last thing I'd want to do is hanging about in Pireaus in the middle of the summer to see whether the ferry is on time...
The big islands are all connected with Athens by air, and Aegean (which is a lot more reliable and generally a damn sight better than OA) flies to most of them.
