For what it's worth, I complained about a terrible meal that I had on a recent flight from IAD-MSY. I was flying in F-class on a 722, and the food had obviously been boarded quite some time earlier.
I asked for my two 500-mile certificates back. Instead, I got a nice letter of apology and $20 voucher for use in Olive Garden & associated restaurants.
I was impressed, however, that the letter appeared to be personalised.
