How important is it to you to make your flights as scheduled?
If it is, it would seem like the prudent course of action would be to call AC reservations, make a change, and pay the change fee plus fare difference.
YYC is not a good option this weekend. Only expensive fares left. AC.com is currently showing a flight through YYZ on Saturday with a base fare of $703, and that gets you on the very nice new 77W. Connection time in YYZ in 1h15, but there still a later flight to fall back on and the 9:00 flight the next morning if it all falls to pieces.
If you leave it to check-in time, there will still be a same-day change fee, but wouldn't have to worry about the fare difference.
If you are looking to see if it's common for agents to re-route people for free, I'd say as a general rule, don't count on it. Ask, but do not expect to receive.
