Comparing hotel neighborhoods: Shinagawa and Shibuya

I'm trying to decide where to stay in Tokyo next month. I have a very good rate (incl a free night) at The Strings, but I've got a question or two about the neighborhood.

For me, the most desirable features are one with lots of restaurants and shops within 2-3 blocks, easy access (short walk, and escalator available) to the subway, and an interesting neighborhood nearby for exploring on foot. For example, I absolutely loved the Grand Hyatt's location: scored an A on all counts. On the other hand, I found the Conrad, to be a superb property with great service, but in an unappealing location for me.

Given that, what can you tell me about The String's Shinagawa neighborhood, esp in terms of nearby places to eat, explore on foot, and transportation? I would be there on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I'm a ripe 60, so no longer do the major hikes and stair climbing that I would have welcomed 30 years ago.

Another possibility would be the ANA IC in Roppongi, though I'm unsure of the access to the subway.

I'm also wondering about the Shibuya area, maybe a place like the Cerulean Tower Hotel. Down side for that is no favorable rate and no free night.

Comments, suggestions, brickbats would be welcome.
