The computer does reset to zero on 12/31. So if you do a challenge which starts in oct nov or december the challenge is fine if you make your 10K points in the 90 day period, but only the miles earned after january 1st will count towards qualifying for the following year.
Remember, challenge is a fast track to status. You still have to do a real requalification, 25K or 50K etc.. to maintain your status for the following year.
And yes I did a challenge once starting early December.
