I fly SAN or SJC to and from SEA or PDX most weeks, and it has been well over a year since I flew in the back; on a couple of occasions I have booked an earlier/later flight because of full F, but that is rare. I frequently book the "bargain" fare and get UGed without fail at the 72 hour window.
